Settling in at Orpierre

Thursday, September 18, 2008

Poor Nick. Even when he tries hard things just don't go well for him. So we had arrived at Orpierre late on the night before, set up the tent, and went to sleep. The problem is that I seem to sleep pretty lightly in tents, which ends up meaning that I have quite vivid dreams. So in the morning, Nick could tell that I was having some kind of nightmare because I was doing little panic-breaths. So he rolled over and hugged me to try to make the nightmare end, I guess. Instead, I woke up and said "Why are you squishing me?!" It turned out that in my dream, I was in the tent with Nick and another of our friends, and in the dream they both thought it would be funny to like lie on top of me and squish me, and I couldn't communicate to them, in the dream, that I couldn't breath. So, needless to say, when Nick hugged me in real life it corresponded to extra squishing in the dream, and I wasn't happy when I woke up. Poor Nick.

So anyways, in the morning it is still chilly and overcast in Orpierre, but not freezing cold the way it was the last time around. We take our time getting up, since we actually climb relatively efficiently when it's just the two of us, so we know we can tire ourselves out in the afternoon. So I make Nick take the car and drive me up to the upper parking lot, near the campground office, because we noticed a sign on the door to the office the night before saying "Free Wi-Fi." Nick goes in to pay for our camping, while I happily attach myself to the very limited browser on his palmtop. Having been without any sort of internet for over a week now, I get myself extremely attached. (Interesting to read the news: "What about Lehman Brothers?") So eventually Nick drags me away and we head into town to get lunch and prepare to climb.

Except, whoopsies, we both forgot that the shop that sells food in town, the Epicerie, closed at like noon. It's 12:15, and it doesn't open again for hours. So we have to go to like a cafe-type thing and get a pizza. It's not too expensive, but we're still mad at ourselves for forgetting about the shop closing.

Climbing that afternoon is good, but still a bit chilly, since it's still mostly overcast (we're climbing on a south-facing wall). We do 7 routes, most of which are all throughout the 5.10 range. Nick onsights a .10d, which is quite good for him. (I just flash it with the pre-hung draws.) Overall, it's a good day, even though we don't take really any pictures.

So it's a pretty low-key day, but still pretty fun. We're finally climbing well, speaking French well, and not freezing. So that was good.
